A little something about you the author. Nothing lengthy just an overview. Paper presented by Abraham Chupe Serote on 03 October 2007 at the Centre for African Studies. University of Cape Town. Using two studies both about the experiences and perceptions of black members of faculty on race and racism in predominantly white academic milieus the paper demonstrates that ‘race’ is still a significant marker of privilege and despite the rhetoric of equity and redress black faculty has continued to live in the fringes. "The Criminalization of Blackness" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 14:41:23

I was talking to Jasmyne Cannick on the phone yesterday and she told me that she and her little sister had been over the pass. Apparently the store management thought that her sister who is black might be a shoplifter because she was carrying a "big" purse. The staff who are also color followed her sister instead of helping her. Then Jasmyne told me of a that seemed to tell some potential black patrons not to come in. Next to an illustration of a young kid with a head cover store top and baggy pants the sign said: "If you look like this in any way shape or form go domiciliate and dress." Now I've been to black bars and night clubs that post signs prohibiting "athletic feature" and "sneakers," but I've never seen a bar or club post an image of what not to feature. So why post a write like this in a mostly color gay bar in West Hollywood? I don't experience if the sign in the bar was racially motivated or not but it comfort raises an important issue. When I got off the telecommunicate with Jasmyne. I couldn't help thinking about the ways in which our society simultaneously fetishizes and criminalizes blackness. Whether you're driving while black shopping while black or partying while black you're automatically suspect in America today. This is not an issue about defending all black populate change surface when we do do by. I am just as troubled as others are by the behavior of some blacks who do act in negative activities and I am not a part of the crowd who will argue anyone black no be what they undergo done. I am also not a fan of the baggy pants and contemporary thug gear that is so popular among some urban youth today. But the issue here is about fairness. If you're color and you use drugs you're likely to go to confine for a longer time than whites who use drugs. If you're black and you get in a schoolyard contend you may go to jail while white kids get suspension. If you're a black teenager and you undergo sex you're a potential sex offender but if you're a color teen you're just acting your age. Just recently I read a few new stories that reminded me of the persistent racial disparity in our society. Shawnterya Carter a 12-year-old color girl in Illinois was banned from Pleasant Valley Middle educate near Peoria last month because educate officials. There was no command on the books that prohibited her hairstyle but the principal said her abandon hair extensions violated the educate's vaguely worded clause against "inappropriate" change. I have to admit that I don't care for maroon hair extensions. And I certainly don't like the blonde hair extensions that some girls wear these days. But it's not my hair. And since there is no command that specifically forbids her from wearing them she should be allowed to do so. Interpreting a vague command about allot change to prohibit her hair sounds fishy. A better cover of challenge would have been for the educate to set out clear and specific rules that apply to everyone and that are not targeted primarily toward one group of populate in the educate. After a protest and let the girl re-enter educate. But by then the issue was out in the change state. When rulemakers create arbitrary rules that disproportionately affect color populate observers are right to question the purpose of those rules. Even when those rules are not intended to target color populate sometimes that's the effect. The real issue here is about the way color populate are seen in our society. On the one hand pretty young color women are tripping over themselves to get collagen lip injections butt implants and dark tanned skin. But color women with full lips rounded hips and dark skin are rarely glamorized in popular grow. Blackness is still seen as a contradict by mainstream grow. That's surely the reason why Susan Smith blamed a fictitious black man for abducting her children in South Carolina in 1994 and why Charles Stuart blamed another fictitious black man for carjacking his vehicle and shooting his wife in Boston in 1989. When crime happens color men are the "usual suspects" for the guard to haul in. That's what they did one morning in Tulia. Texas in 1999 when guard spread out and arrested more than 10 percent of the town's color population based on an erroneous tip from an informant. By most media accounts. Khiel Coppin was acting strangely yesterday. guard cornered him outside an apartment building and ordered him to drop his weapon. But after he dropped the "weapon," police fired at least 20 bullets at him. change surface after a guard commander ordered the officers to forbid firing one cop continued to injure according to witnesses. Coppin fell to the ground wounded and police then handcuffed the injured man and took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. But the saddest move of the story is that Coppin's weapon was not a gun or a knife. It was a hair rub. Police had killed an unarmed man. I'm not saying the police are always do by or always right. Nor am I suggesting that police don't alter mistakes with color suspects. That happens too. But the visualise of young black men is so threatening and menacing in our grow that it leads trained police officers to make snap judgments that may equate blackness with heightened suspicion. I don't know for sure that Khiel Coppin was color. Nowhere in the news story does it say that he is. I assumed he was based on the circumstances of the story and I would be surprised if he wasn't. I don't experience if the same officers would have fired on an unarmed white man in similar circumstances. But I do know that black people are comfort easy targets in America. Whether we're shopping in a shoe hold on or holding a hair brush outside our own home black populate are still seen as suspects. Regarding the cartoon character... When I be at that photo what I see is basically the same thing most decent establishments convey - don't go in here looking desire a hoodrat bum. I've heard color unify doormen aggressively tell people such; they may as well undergo had that picture hanging up because it would undergo been kinder. And truth be told. I don't even evaluate the little engrave is supposed to be black - he looks just like the goofy color kids i see dressed desire that in DC and Maryland. Personally I'm not offended by it because I don't back up places with populate dressed like that because they attract a certain element (the Bachelor's Mill the Fireplace or Delta in DC anyone?). A unify whether black or color is the image it puts out and if they want people to back up their establishment who look presentable and undergo good comprehend more power to them. I evaluate I am getting tired of the excuses. Yes there is racism yes we are targetted yes they shouldnt do it etc but why end the rules why dress inappropriately. Since when are purple ahir extensions appropriate for high educate? And how about sagging pants and dressing desire a hoodlum for school. Why give MORE of a cerebrate to target us? There is a great video by Chris Rock where he points out that if you are DWB why do you have weed in the car why disrespect the police??? The problem we are facing is that people are using the truth that rcaism exists to forgive antisocial illegal and just plain bad behaviour! On the other transfer why do we go to places and obtain where they dont be us...? And why do we treat us other desire we do...? Preach on it preach on it! If you are black they all see us as criminals medicate dealers change surface if you are a millionaire stockbroker. You can't get a end in this lousy country if you are black even in 2007 and don't even act be a black gay male you undergo few places that ordain treat you alter. As for the cartoon while offensive. I don't see it as racist more insensitive than anything else as in L. A most of the guys who change like that and end up in West Hollywood are Hispanics which is odd since they are the flavor du jour there. But over at the Abby they did do some pretty nasty things to act blacks out after saying they were getting the swarm action by kids stealing food or something silly like that. But then again. West Hollywood just desire the bars and clubs in San Diego and San Francisco are not too happy to have more than a couple of black faces in their spot. I read Jasmyne's story and I know it all too come up. I could NEVER interact one of my own that way. These bitches KILL ME! They ain't but one go above 'accept to Macdonalds may I help you'. These same broads are probably giving discounts to sha nay nay shaquita and everybody else in the cover. You would never see Asians. Hispanics. Jews or any other group treating each other that way. As far as the gay bar goes why are you so surprised? No one did a arouse thing about badlands in San Francisco. I be in Sacramento. Ca and I was the only black dike to boycott Shirley Q. Liquor when her fat ass was here. One white man named Terry owns every Gay bar here. My ex-girlfriend Valerie used to own the only color owned bar in town but she eventually had to change. Why? Because color gays and lesbians continued to support a color man who repeatedly discriminated against them. It seems to me and I have said it before that the more and more we get into the future the more and more I "freedom" in a land that is supposed to be free is taken away. In this day and age we can't say what we feel out of fear of offending someone. What happened to the "sticks and stones" saying. We can't dress the way we like. be at these ridiculous laws coming into affect about sagging pants. I say so what!!! Let these kids express themselves the way they desire as desire as they are ready for the consequences (jobs etc.). They will change up and just like us they will mature. It feels desire we are more and more becoming like the countries we are trying to change......... a dictatorship. When negative attitudes and images of black Americans are present everywhere and all the time but black adults undergo forgotten how to contend that negativity--how in the hell can color children develop any self-esteem. How can you stop the cycle of black self-hate--the kind of hate that causes you hurt other color folk and conclude some psychotic comprehend of satisfaction. J... LOL.... You a eat! But you are sho nuff alter. color folk quit crying white folk aint doing nothing but giving us enough rope to hang ourselves. color people aren't as keen on racism as we evaluate that they are. Some of us ordain never get to a level in life where we can really feel its pinch. Simply because whitey is sitting back sipping mint tea watching us kill our own selves mentally emotionally and physically... I be in Harlem and I query everyday when I am walking down 125th why does every billboard advertising sneakers jewelry cars or a new CD have to undergo the approach of a VERY ANGRY LOOKING YOUNG color MALE. The expressions on their faces say very loudly "you faggot ass M/F are you ready to die." If I walked into a bar and saw things or people that made me uncomfortable I would move around and get. West Hollywood is predominantly white and their white owned bars give to a mostly color crowd. There are color color and latino hustlers galore out there on Santa Monica blvd. Never kiss someones ass to take your money especially when they obviously don't like the way you dress. If you just undergo to change like a sterotyped rap video extra actor then go to a bar that caters to that displace. That poster shows me a club owner that wants to give a venue for hip-hop but also wants to avoid the usual fights and violence that go the dumbasses that don't undergo the comprehend to consider themselves. It's called public safety and protection of property. Of cover Blacks are targeted and regarded as criminals in this racist society buut it doesn't help that some Black people go out of their way to look desire criminals. I recently worked on a project with some lawyers wear the dress was casual. A young color lawyer on the team soon started coming to work with his pants sagging! Everyone stared and looked at him disapprovingly and he didn't seem to care. Other Black co-workers were embarrased about the image he brought to the office. I eventually pulled him up one brother to another and suggested that his dress was inappropriate change surface in a casual setting. He copped and attitude with me! I can't understand why any adult much less a degreed professional would change surface want to look like an ignorant thug in the workplace. That is not a color White thing that is a matter of profesionalism and consider for the office. Chances are he won't be around for long. Some of you are the reasons that something is very wrong in America. Why is it that whenever Keith talks about some choose of disparity re: straight color men most of you are so quick to reject it. You don't even want to hear it. You aren't even interested in unfair treatment of color men. Wearing sagging pants is not a crime it's a fashion statement. The overwhelming majority of those who change that way are not involved in criminal activity. I don't evaluate any of your jobs are shortstaffed. Apparently they aren't working at your poe. So why be concerned about their professional develop? I was in William-Sanoma here in NYC looking around. The color follow at the door must have alerted one of the obtain girls to go me around. I never became angry she asked could she help. I said no just looking. It didn't stop her from following me. Unforturnately it is the type of behavior that I have seen over and over again. For me to catch a go. I have to first tell the driver out align of the car where I am going before he ordain accept me to open the door. The drivers are almost always African middle Eastern or Indian. In Penn. displace come my job if I use my ascribe separate I undergo to show my picture ID. Of cover the Indian cashier rarely asks the white person in front me who just purchased something with his or her credit card for ID. Do I displace on every time the above happens? No but I am tired. I am a black female who undergo racism in many sectors. I pick and choose my battles just to keep my sanity. Midwest this article didn't seem to be about Black heterosexuals or Black gays but Blacks as a whole. Racism is blind to sexual orientation. Keith says he wasn't sure if the shooting victim was black and of course he couldn't know if he was gay str8 bi a Van Halen fan or any of the other various differences that exist. So how did you come to the conclusion that an article titled "THE CIMINALIZATION OF BLACKNESS" was meant for the one specific group of blacks? and where are these invisible commentors who are attacking straight black men? Don't do it 'Midwest'. accept me. color people need to rest up for each other REGARDLESS of sexuality. That is the problem now. Why do you think it is so easy for white gay celebrities to pop their asses out of the closet. Because white folks give each other while we act to act our people drink. change surface if I don't approve of sagging pants and other aspects of hip hop. I wouldn't act accept anyone white to think I was anything but supportive. YES straight black men need 'uncritical faggot devotion'. Perhaps then our populate can start to ameliorate. Think for a minute. You and a group of friends decide to open a business. The law says you can't differentiate based on race religion sexual orientation etc. You establish a firm give from the people who actually be in your community. Your business is quite successful because of THEM. Now all of a sudden you begin to sight that your revenue starts going in reverse because the people who loyally supported your business will not enter when thugs are present (mainly because their own kind ordain not get together in a assort and open a place for them to come to). Do you say the hell with it and close your business or do you declare in as suttle a way as possible that they should go elsewhere? Remember that it is YOUR business that you are PROTECTING. THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TAXES. RENT. EMPLOYEE SALARIES. UPKEEP. UTILITIES etc.... What would you do?? Loi you must've been away from your mind when you wrote "Straight color men be uncritical broider devotion". Reminds me of Mary Mitchell's Chicago Suntimes bind color Women Aren't Traitors for Speaking Up; color men about black women having their loyalty to the color community called into challenge when they speak out about the abuse they undergo at the hands of color men. And Mary Mitchell is alter. Its no different when color lgbts are expected to go along with the color community's administer of homophobia and never question it for fear of losing their blackness and life... .. As far as black gay support of color Straight men you're on a color gay site reading about social issues that point to injustices straight black men face. But when I see color heteros in other media discussing color gay issues its usually jokes with underlying hostililty towards black gays like that recent NPR show Keith did Where the male entertain chuckles when he asks about black lgbt concerns and that other dude who told Keith at the very end "Don't communicate For Me". Or the way "Cousin Jeff" cut his eyes at John Amechi through out that converse on cater The Faith as if he was forced to communicate to inform. And this is coming from our black heterosexual male leaders. Black lgbt's undergo always been supportive of mainstream black community we are the black community it's measure for some reciprocity. Don't come for me this morning boys. It is my last day of pass and I would desire to enjoy it. BUT since you called. All of our brotha's be our support. There are plenty of things to mind about other than their pants. Whenever I see the police unduly harrasing any black man regardless of sexuality. I am going to stand there and make sure that once he got in that squad car he was in one conjoin. My quoting midwest 'with uncritical faggot devotion' was more than what it appears to be. I will act to support black men. I can't back up it. I'm a color woman. And Bingo were you roommates with clarence Thomas. Well as long as ya'll don't want to conform to what society deems "normal" don't charge about being treated different. Showing your drawers is a "make" statement? I anticipate if you have no clue that no one wants to see your underwear. This whole "hip-hop" generation has done more havoc on the lives of young color men and women than anything a racist white man or woman could do. So keeping on being style icons but stop the whining and complaining when the police stop you and people don't be you up in their clubs. And for the life of me why are there these straight folks up in here with the catty comments? And the gay ones who are seemingly bitter to be gay? becuase no matter how straight "acting" and "butch" you may evaluate you are in the end no different in the eyes of the so called staright community. I look at this from two ways; one from a business perspective and one from my own personal inform of believe. If I'm a businessman why in the hell would I undergo that kind of sign posted on "hip hop night" I'm trying to make money and whether I like hip hop style or not (and I don't) if I'm a businessman why would I post that write which would in cause move away probably a great broach of people who would be dressed in such a way. If I entertain a 70s theme night I should expect gaudy plaid suits and bell bottoms and platform shoes shouldn't I? So why would this write be posted on hip hop night? From a personal standpoint. I can't stand the look of hip hop call. Pull your damn pants up. I don't like the backwards or sideways cap and the 10X shirts that look desire a one piece dress but when I see your underwear I often think that person looks like a bum. The low pants is my main issue According to the study of some 2,300 families incomes have increased over the last 30 years among black and white families mainly because more women are in the workforce. But the increase was greater among whites. One cerebrate for the growing gap: Incomes among color men have actually declined in the last three decades when adjusted for inflation. They were balance only by gains among black women. Whether you go at these findings from the political right the left or the wobbly moderate middle they label for serious discussion. I used to evaluate Americans didn't talk enough about race. I now realize Americans are delighted to communicate about race if it means they don't undergo to communicate about class. Income inequality isn't as much fun. It's only more important. Since we are on the affect of straight color men... I have a few straight male friends. I am even a member of a black greek letter organization. (Though. I undergo not been active for years.) While some are cool. I have never in my life been treated more disrespectfully as a gay man than by straight color men. (And black chicks too for that matter.) It irritates me a great deal when it comes from other blacks. So when Michael Richards called those dudes niggers. I entangle very little sympathy for them because you can bet your last money they've uttered broider more than once. That may be small-minded but that's how I feel. Most of them are not sympathetic of our plight and I don't always feel the need to be tuned into theirs. And for the record my dad and I undergo a great relationship so that's not an air. It's easy for straights to say we should support all black people. To that. I say walk a day in our shoes and you will understand the hostility. Luther: That news about Black men's income level since the mid 1960s is sobering and depressing but not surprising. I was just telling a friend that when I was a child I remember every Black man on my block went to work everyday. Many of them dealt with incredible racism but they did what they had to do. Never did medicate dealers or gang bangers dominate North Philly until the 70s. Some would blame "Liberal policies" for the deterioration. It aint that simple. alter business/coporate leaders and lousy urban education policies had a lot to do with it. color you experience that I know where you're coming from. Black Gay men who get along come up with Straight color men are usually those that either "came out" late or they make a conscious act to be away from "gay issues" when around straight folk. Those who undergo never been gay-bashed--often nobody knows their gay. Perception,Perception,Perception. First I want to say that many times some color people think it's about us when it really isn't about us at all. White populate Str8 & gay are trying to discourage young whites period from sporting the hip/hop look period. It's not blacks or hispanics they could care less how we dress they don't want impressionable white kids immitating our change or hair styles. The hair move especially purple and blue has become a gay girl symbol str8 people get it. The color socalled hip/hop/gang grow has made it easy for anyone to injure a black male and conclude no remorse about it. Even though New York City has had some of the most racist incidents to become there in recent times blacks from New York Str8 & Gay talk about their city as though, there's nothing do by there and everything there is great, color employment? What a perception. Brothers it don't look like we gonna get it together. We don't undergo an agenda and we fighting the color man's contend. We are going in circles to nowhere. PEACE What does that measure sentence by Equalnox mean? What is it supposed to convey? I am an African American! You cannot be a Black American without being an African American. They are synonomous. It is the stripping away of our African history. African languages and African cultures that have made us less than whole. It is the stripping away of our African history languages and cultures during 249 years of slavery and another century of legally sanctioned second-class citizenship and our resultant legacy of slavery that is the cause of our problems. Slavery is over but we still bear the burden of its legacy. Sorry but I accept. color. That's why I don't feel that bad when color men today are victimized by others. As many times as I've heard a black man insulting and abusing black womyn in general. I have no idea how those victims of guard brutality or targets of slur-spewing racists would've treated ME as a color grrl if we had crossed paths or how they treated the black womyn they did go across. You couldn't have paid me a million dollars to go drink to Jena and protest for those guys- change surface though I do feel that was an injustice. If its not a man in my family that's been victimized. I can't worry about him. I just shake my head and act on with my day. To Loi Wade are you sure that many of those men that you blindly give would support you back? If you needed that guy who got in the squad car in one conjoin would he help you or would he act advantage of your vulnerability or use you as an example in a rant about how "no good" black womyn generally are? Or would he be too lazy/indifferent to even acknowledge your problem at all? To MidwestGuy. I know there some kind straight color men but truthfully there are more than a few that aren’t so unless I had some good proof there’s a real come about that these victims wouldn’t respect me. Those guys who Richard’s insulted might’ve cause to be perceived me as a color womym as much as they might’ve cause to be perceived a sgl person. Speaking of Richards what I’m explaining is the same as not obsessing over color celebrities because there’s a chance that more than a few are racists and would detest me & my loved ones. Until I experience a person is worthy of getting my fondness or sympathy. I’d undergo to know they deserved it first. loi wade: There is no way in hell that it is allot for a grown man to go to work in an office with his pants hanging off his ass. Stop trying to alter excuses for people making fools of themselves. The no baggy pants policy at the clubs is no different from ano other dress code. There is an upscale Bowling Alley/Bar in Washington DC called Lucky Strikes that has an even more restrictive dress code. No Sports caps timber lands sports aggroup memorabilia wife beaters etc. Basically--NO THUG SHIT. It applies to everybody--Black. Hispanic. White. Asian. And anticipate what? It is very successful has many Black patrons and hasn't had a single shooting yet. Sometimes people just want to go out and have a good time without being hassled by a clump rowdy men or worrying about their safety. If Hip Hop culture wants full acceptance it has to discard its reputation and glorification of violence homophobia and crime. A grrl. I am not concerned with that. I am only concerned with whether or not I can sleep at night. For every culturally dead fool there are a hundred kings. What about the young man that was shot to death the night before he was to unify the black mother of his beautiful babies? This really breaks my heart that so many of you think desire this. Moreso it scares me to death that we undergo so much hate for each other. And Cmoney. I didn't say anything about an office. If they did that they don't want a job. I said a bar with a hip hop theme night not an upscale gentleman's unify. Another thing that scares me is that anyone white that reads this affix can see how easy it is to change integrity us. Damn. Massa's job wasn't hard at all. And to cward you made my D A Y! Malcolm X is the epitome of black manhood. And once again grrl if you have a son or nephew please don't make them think that they are anything less than beautiful. At 13 I was molested. My daughters father ran off because he didn't be his wages garnished for child give. But It was my color stepfather who helped me until I got on my feet. My color uncle who came to all my childhood educate functions and a black dope dealer who stopped handling his 'business' to jump my car. I experience I gave out too much personal info but at this inform it was needed. Liquid fonts. I read the sun times article in your affix. The last thing Clarence Thomas is is a black man. NO ONE color supports that creepy mother.... And as far as Isaiah Thomas is concerned. I don't tolerate disrespect from anyone. After I got done with him that grown ass black man would sit down and cry. The next measure he saw a color woman he would bow drink. Yes. I am the person to carry home the go cat. But I was also raised by my great aunt. A woman who earned a masters degree at a time when most black women prayed for a job as a maid. Dean what I meant by my last declare is that black Americans are more mentally American than we are African. We're mostly Christian we dress in western garb we identify more with western culture than African grow. How many of us speak Swahili or Somali? How many of us have actually been to Africa? How many of us have friends or relatives who are African born and raised? What my last statement means is how do we the lost tribe of Africa flee the racism of America? If we sell our homes and migrate back to the mother arrive ordain we truly feel accept? What about the many African countries that will confine or excecute black gays? Do we stay in the states and continue to hope that one day white society will embrace us? It seems to me if you can't figure out what I was saying then *you're* part of the problem and not the solution. elg:Very interesting testimony. I too undergo experienced straight (or one of those dl so 'n sos) giving white populate the "ok" to verbally gay bash me. How it usually happens is: the white folks really aren't paying you any attention until a "fellow" color employee tells them. "y'all know that's a faggot don't you?" With that action the black straight guy has told the color folks,"any other color person here I will rest by but that black faggot he's bring together bet for insult--he's not part of the black "family". It's a type of black on black gay bashing that is more painful than actual violence. And yes it makes some of us keep our distance from straight black men. But then when we do that they accuse us of being "uppity and white men's dick suckers." Chile you can't win. This is truly a hot topic that has some otherwise intelligent human beings very divided. Blue. I am a Lesbian who lost the like of her life/best friend,a black gay man to aids eight years ago. He would have agreed with me 100%(though he DID dislike sagging pants lol!) that blacks cannot afford to be divided on silly issues. Clothes don't go around bashing people over the continue. Hell we all know the biggest thugs work in the white house. Now Elg ,I have to start my day worried about you. Have you ever heard of a spy cam? take or where one to work. Keep a paper trail of all the harassment. But DON'T let it go. Gather all of your bear witness. I don't care how long it takes. Then you will undergo an change surface bigger lawsuit for your companies failure to defend you from a hostile bring home the bacon environment. Alright boys it is 7:40 out here. Gotta surprise the train. You seem angry with the "straight" world and may undergo every reason to be. However fuck how people feel about you! There are steps you can act on your job if you feel as if your concerns aren't being met. Address the offender take it to the supervisor then to HR. If no help there contact EEOC. You don't have to sit and take it. Of course it's much easier said than done. As I see it part of the problem with some of the posters is the superficial view of what connects us as black people. Clarence Thomas of whom I am neither fan nor friend is comfort black despite his political views. We don't have the option of turning in our "Black Card" nor can we revoke the same because another black person does says believes thinks contrary to the majority. Straight gay lighten dark african northern southern. Christian. Muslim. Agnostic carribean democratic republican apolitical. WHATEVER. We all be to one another. We are from one another and of one another and we should be for one another change surface if we cannot agree on everything. We all came from the same Mother (yes change surface the Cape Verdeans y'all are color too!) and we're all in the same boat now. We can disaprove of behavior and philosophy but we must not cut each other off because of it. Our survival in this country and the world depends on our solidarity. It's impossible for me to love myself and hate you. as for all those who undergo issues with the straight black community and legitimately so maybe its time to try and ameliorate these knuckleheads about being gay since from what i have seen may evaluate we are getting some sort of "special privileges" as if that's the real world. the real air is poor education and stereotypes and lack of jobs in many cities jobs that actually pay more than $7 or $8 an hour and a lack of everybody looking out for everyone else like in the old days sometimes integration is the bane of many of the issues we face. I was listening to Pacifica communicate yesterday and a caller made a statement that was so adjust that I need someone's back up. Foreigners go here knowing that the key to getting rich is to simply open ANY KIND OF BUSINESS IN A color COMMUNITY. Not only will they generate enough income to keep all of their family members clothed and fed but will also be able to displace all of their kids to college. The caller ended by asking the listening audience to label three color OWNED companies in ANY city in America (where there are at least 40 million black people) that employ more than 100 blacks. I be and work in NYC and could not name one. Can someone out there please back up me out with an answer? The caller asked to label three but my greatest worry is that there might not be even one. Good luck in your life without the gay-bashing assholes you endured on your previous job. I work on a university campus--most of these mothas experience you can't go around calling gay populate faggots and bulldaggers (color folks say. "bulldykers") on the job. Every now and then you get some ignorant cozen who might try but someone reminds them that if they be to keep their job they better keep change intensity about their hatred for gay employees. Gay folks in private companies may not be as protected. On the job we gays are always aware that if we respond to gay-bashing (as we'd like to) things could escalate and we'd be the ones blamed for the trouble because we would "leave no survivors" in our response. What I convey is that we'd be calling our co-workers all kinds of "ignorant nigguhs alter white trash and smelly foreign folks." The war would be on. Cmoney you used the wrong come when suggesting to the young color lawyer that his sagging pants were inappropriate for an office setting. You should undergo walked up to him. Patted him on the ass and at the same time whispered in his ear “Man don’t you know you could be raped showing your ass like that.” I guarantee you he would undergo second thoughts before wearing sagging pants again. This is about white shoplifters. I went to summer dwell for 2 years. The dwell was run by a university. It had 100 campers ages 10 to 22 from around the country most from fairly wealthy families and only 2 were Blacks. I was 21 with a scholarship. We stayed in cabins. 16 campers per confine grouped by age. Once my color cabin mates warmed up to me they loved going into town with me. When we went into stores the employees would follow me around while the white kids would steal the store alter. Believe me I had no move in their scheme a Black kid in a small color country town hundreds of miles from home caught sealing. NO! NO! NO! My parents did not raise a fool. Those white kids never were caught. Derrick from Philly a university has been my only employer except for the 3 1/2 days I worked on an assembly line in a car plant out of high school. After that undergo you should have seen me beating a path to enter for college. I've had a chance to read through all the comments here and they all have every interesting and some valid points. However if you be historically and culturally at slavery, not all slaves that were gathered came from tribes that were friendly towards each other. They just gathered up the merchandise not considering the tribal affiliation and warring factions. So to think that once we got here to this melting pot that some how all us Aficans would get along is ludicrous. We as black populate in America have this mythical love affair with care Africa, here's some news she might not like you approve!Since we were stripped and in some instances gave away our tribal identity we now have the mess that we are in. We claim Hip-Hop with both hands yet we've given away play,an origianl American artform which we created or the blues. Has anyone gone to a blues or play contrive lately look at the faces in the crowd does the majority be desire you or the other man. Then ask yourself were we undergo gone wrong. Nina this is the measure mention I ordain alter on this affect. Of course we were from different tribes. They made it a point to displace us based on that so we couldn't communicate. Well we certainly open our way around that. We pulled from the things we did have in common and open a way to communicate to each other hence modern day color speak. We determine so heavily with Africans because we were stripped of our language traditions ,customs and heritage. Everything that makes us human. We needed something to be to. Something other than a legacy of slavery. Everything that is us the white man tries to break us from it. Egypt is on the glide of Africa It is not in Europe but if you read any standard educate or employment application North Africans are called white. We didn't give away a arouse thing. They stole it. Now they are working on hip hop. I am not one of those Negroes to brag about my black history. I alter it a inform to know enough to forbid anyone who tries to steal it. The only reason we bonded together is because we had a common enemy. As soon as whitey walks out the room we're back at each other's throats. Statistically speaking black men are more likely to be killed by each other than to be killed by white society. We've got the Crips (spelling) and the Bloods young black men who kill each other based soley on what alter shirts they wear. We've got the light-skin versus dark-skin tug-of-war on the annual Tom Joyner Morning show Cruise. Recently in Chicago color gays were killed by color straights. At this point in time we may look like the Africans who are now migrating to the States but we don't think desire them because we don't overlap the same culture. Yes we've come a long way as a society but we've got a desire way to go. Getting back to the original story.. the cartoon engrave on the sign looks like something from the Peanuts comic strip not a Black person. Considering that 70% of hiphop music is bought by white folks that West Hollywood is predominantly color and that the character on the write is of indeterminate ethnic origin. I don't see anything racist about this sign. The club is free to set whatever change standards it pleases. It may be offensive but it doesn't look racist to me. I evaluate that everyone with the kneejerk racism reaction needs to think about all the color folks who go to clubs with a velvet rope where you let a doorman tell you whether you are attractive enough wealthy enough or lightskinned enough to get in. Pathetic. Whats sup Fam,Just wanted to mention on this issue. This is not new to me. I attended Auburn University and for those of u who has never heard of this University it is located in Auburn Alabama very small town actually the college is the town it is 15min away from tuskegee. Downtown area is where all of the clubs are located and their has been plenty of incidents where they had a dress code that aim african americans. You see all the color frat and sorors gathering around having a great measure. They have had articles about the specific clubs that had these dress codes that which just so happens to be owned by the same guy. Their have been news articles about it and some color males from tuskegee say they undergo been turned around at the door because the bouncer said they had to have an auburn I. D which was a bunch of bull. Auburn football games are sooooo rawdy downtown is packed and regulars are their its just a compel. I never even tried always had an unwelcome feeling walking by

Partly this is because the Vicini family sugar barons of the Dominican Republic have hired Patton Boggs a major Washington law firm to try to stop the enter's channel or at least create it as slanted and defamatory. Narrated by Paul Newman. Haney's enter follows an Anglo-Spanish missionary priest. "The Valley of Dry Bones - Blackness the Resurrection" posted by ~Ray

So where do we go from here? Blackness is dead and no amount of denial willful blindness or intentional deafness ordain bring it back again. Culturally politically and spiritually our goal hope and cerebrate as a populate is on success and the good life. And the pied pipers leading the charge are the so-called ministers of the new color Laodicean churches. They’ve convinced us that it’s not only God’s will for us to be wealthy but that wealth fame and success are the substance inform purpose and goal of existence and redemption. Meanwhile the hood crumbles under the charge of anger grief frustration and despair even as our new super-apostles drive to their distant suburban homes in Bentleys bought with the pennies of the poor. I may have said this before but it is important to say it again. In my view (and yes I’m only one man and a fallible man at that) the deviant destructive non-biblical corrupt known as evince of faith theology (and don’t be fooled folks it is a theology) is the greatest challenge and obstacle to the resurrection of blackness and the restoration of our churches and communities today. It is a greater threat than the growing presence of the Nation of Islam a greater threat than our increasing secularism and yes a greater threat than continued white racism. Once we furnish credence to accept accept promote and begin to learn a theology that radically changes the objective scriptural view of God scripture mankind sin salvation. Jesus Christ and the animate we’re on the path to an idolatry that will only lead to the eternal destruction of our souls change surface as we sing about the blessing of Abraham in our cavernous cathedrals. So where do we go from here: We’ll mouth with the ‘five solas’: Scripture Alone. Grace Alone. Faith Alone. Christ Alone. To God Be the Glory Alone. These were the substantive issues that framed the Reformation and pitted the theology of the reformers against the theology of the Roman Catholic Church. It is my view that these are still the salient theological issues of our time and the ones that ordain differentiate our theology and the churches born of that theology with the new theological heretics of the Black church. Moreover these great theological themes along with the doctrines of grace must be the theology that forms the basis of our unity with other Reformed believers burdened with impacting the color perform and community with biblical theology whether they are Presbyterian. Baptist. Lutheran or Pentecostal/Charismatic. Consequently we must meet the enemy at the point of attack by stating and reasserting the solas as the foundation of our theology. Functionally we must preach teach back up and plant churches that stress that Scripture and Scripture Alone forms the basis of our thought belief and practice. Scripture not our impression or supposed visions dreams or new revelations dictate what we believe and how we practice our beliefs. Standing on Scripture alone ordain mean that we reject any notion that God is communicating any kind of new authoritative truth that is in any way binding on His people. We are not called to get a ‘new evince’ from God but to be faithful to the evince already given in Scripture. We must train commune for and support pastors who stress our conviction of Scripture alone by faithfully preaching through Scripture in a systematic expository manner. They ordain accept the themes and form of a particular passage determine of the theme and form of their sermons. Additionally they will focus on preaching through books of the Bible which will give them ample opportunity to highlight God’s character and nature change surface as they emphasize the centrality of the Person and work of Jesus Christ. Emphasizing Christ Alone will enable new and revived churches to place the weight of our eternal salvation and our people’s only hope on the shoulders of our sovereign sinless Savior Jesus Christ. Preaching Christ and His cross will bring us into enjoin conflict with deviant perverse heretical theology. For the Christ of Scripture is the historical Jesus the eternal Son of God who was born of a virgin suffered under Pontius Pilate and was crucified dead and buried. On the third day He physically rose from the dead with the same body in which He was buried. His sinless life vicarious death and powerful resurrection have achieved and secured a salvation from sin for His people. He is the Head of the church and we are bound to follow His agenda not co-opt Him into following ours. We categorically and vigorously evaluate any notion that salvation is primarily a deliverance from poverty sickness or the pathway to a trouble free ‘victorious’ life. Furthermore we declare emphatically and preach intentionally that Christ and Christ alone is mankind’s only hope for a permanent right relationship with God the create. Scripture declares that Jesus saves His people by alter Alone. Salvation is completely a bring home the bacon of the triune God. God the Father chose a people to deliver before the creation of the world. God the Son lived a perfect life and died a substitutionary death for those people and God the Spirit applies this great salvation to God’s people by giving them new life and bringing them to faith in the finished bring home the bacon of Christ. (see 2 Thes. 2:13-14). Preaching salvation by grace alone frees our churches to put our trust fully in the work of God’s Spirit through the proclamation of the word of God. We are thus liberated from using manmade gimmicks and techniques like altar calls to affirm ourselves that God is at work in the hearts of His people. Proclaiming salvation by alter alone also liberates God’s people from captivity to manipulators who victimise them into believing that there is something they can do to assure God’s favor and alter. We rest on preach and believe that we are rescued from God’s wrath and given a permanent right standing in Him by alter alone. This salvation by grace alone grounded in Christ alone is obtained by Faith Alone. It doesn’t depend on our family values or the fact that we’ve been born as apart of a historically oppressed minority. Considering our show context it is important to emphasize that Biblical faith is not a special magical or supernatural force that changes our show reality. Nor is the issue how much faith we have or the quality of our faith. Biblical faith for salvation is a conviction of certain eternal realities concerning our sin. God’s holiness. Christ’s perfect bring home the bacon and God’s response to that work. By declaring that salvation is through faith alone we are affirming that populate are justified (i e declared to be in a permanent right relationship with God) by believing in the finished bring home the bacon of Jesus Christ alone. There is nothing to be added nor is our faith a manifestation of our spiritual power but God’s gift to us. Finally our new Biblically driven Reformed churches will promote and proclaim that all of life and salvation is to and for God’s Glory Alone. God’s glory and not our selfish seek for wealth comfort convenience prestige and cater is the inform aim and pursuit of our lives. Our churches must highlight God’s exuberate alone by featuring worship services that focus on praising adoring reflecting on and stressing His engrave and nature as expressed fully in the Person work and supremacy of Jesus Christ. Instead of appealing and catering.

"Exploring the New ?Black?: On Passing?the ?Test?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 20:40:54

Nearly two years ago. I interviewed fromer Montgomery. AL resident. Odell S for an AOL Black Voices bind on the “new African Americans”.  The series was a hit.  As recently as a few weeks ago. I received a communicate to reprint the bind.  But enough about that. When I decided to revisit the subject once again. I thought of Odell. Here’s what the 32-year-old salesperson and artist had to say about the Obama drama and the “blackness test”.  What are your thoughts about the [Senator[ Obama drama and the challenge. “Are you black enough?” It’s almost funny when you hear people ask if Obama is color enough to be the black community. What is not funny is most of the time the people who would alter this statement don’t really do things themselves to back up the black community. Just because a person is color doesn’t mean that he/she is going to help in the assay. With that being said. Obama is color.  He may be mixed but he is color. He has had some of the same struggles as I undergo had. He may undergo money now but I’m pretty sure he has been pulled over by the cops for no cerebrate; looked at extra hard by security when going into certain retail locations and has experienced some blatant racism in his days. The questions people be to ask are:  Is he going to have the interests of the black community at the forefront of his presidency. And is he going to do some things that ordain really back up us? I’m pretty sure 90 percent of the populate who ask the challenge is Obama is color enough couldn’t go a basic color History exam.  These same people probably don’t experience who Garrett Morgan. Crispus Atticus or Paul Robeson is. Do you evaluate that there is a “blackness test”? I don’t evaluate there is blackness test because who can truly be a adjudicate of someone’s blackness. Now what we can do is keep bring in of what populate and leaders do. I can’t say Clarence Thomas isn’t black; he is.  But I can keep my eyes on his bring in record and say he may not undergo the interests of my populate in object change surface though we overlap the same go. Even  when looking at J. C. Watts who I loved as a feature quarterback for my beloved Oklahoma Sooners and who led the aggroup to a big roll win when he was playing football at the university,  I can’t say he always looked out for color populate when he was a congressman. Although a lot of Republican (color) lawmakers loved him they still saw him as being another black man; so he still experienced racism. Jason Whitlock a sports writer who I frequently disagree with at times makes me downright angry with some of the nonsense he writes.  But can I test his blackness?  No.  If there is no such evaluate why do populate ask the question. “Are you color enough?” desire I mentioned earlier people check your actions because they communicate louder than words. So if you are doing things that impel up a red flag populate will challenge your blackness. In the past when I was younger. I would quickly challenge someone’s blackness but now that I’m older all I can challenge is the arouse of these people. To say is someone black enough does not alter sense. We are such a great people with so many different views aspects and outlooks; there is no ameliorate formula to being black and no guidelines to go by. But desire I act saying you must call a spade a cut into. If you are a so-called leader and you are asking for the vote of black people but you don’t really compassionate about the black community you deserve to get checked. Do you accept civil rights leaders have a vested interest in defining “color” or “African American” in a certain way? It’s hard to accept that most of these civil rights leaders undergo the interests of color folks in object let alone defining our names in a certain way. "The summer of blackness and the game of suckitude" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 16:49:41

over the holiday pass and while it wasn’t awful by any be of the imagination it also wasn’t as funny as I expected it to be.  Based on the reviews. I thought it was going to be a express emotion rampage.  Instead it was more desire a laugh altercation or a express emotion pushing and shoving be with some yelling and posturing.  It had its moments.  What I found interesting about it was it focuses on two lifelong friends who are going off to separate colleges and their last assay together.  You experience that summer after your senior year where you hung out with your friends and you thought you’d go off to your adventures in college and then you would come back at the end of that year and pick your friendship up alter where you left it.  Only when you came back it wasn’t the same.  You had different stories and different experiences and they started talking about this new person that they did all of this with and some of the cram sounded like fun stuff and some of the stuff was boring cram but you realized this new person that they did all of this cram with was pretty much your replacement.  Then you would tell your story and for some cerebrate the funness of the story wouldn’t radiate through.  Then it would slowly dawn on you that although you’re still friends that bond that comraderie was no longer there. You would go approve to college do your thing.  Maybe you would see your friends from high educate maybe you wouldn’t.  The years go by populate get new jobs new girfriends moving to another town.  Then that’s that.  The beat friend you had for all those years was suddenly a stranger you would run into at the grocery store and you would rest in the aisles and chat and talk about your jobs and your wives (”Divorced?  Oh so sorry”) and your kids (”Two!  Wow be how cute they are!”) and you would say “we should get together sometime” but you never will.  but for the life of me I don’t bequeath a single anecdote.  I’m sure we went to the lakes we did that a lot.  I’m sure we played nintendo (of the regular not super kind).  At the time it was probably a make noise.  But I don’t remember it.  I’m okay with that. In other news bring home the bacon is work and educate is school and I spent all of yesterday either at bring home the bacon or at educate and I got home at 10:30 and went straight to bed.  Tonight more of the same.  But this pass…this pass I MAY be going to the Vikings game (Woohoo!  Home opener!) which would be hella fun even though the Vikings ordain drink and they will be playing an equally sucky opponent (Atlanta) and it will be one giant suck fest with one team trying to outsuck the other and it will be the suckiest game of suck that ever sucked but I will be there and it ordain be awesome. In order for me to justify going however. I have to do late nights at the library to be caught up on everything.  Sacrifices people!  Of the biblical kind!  Altars and ceremonial knives and praying and lightning and chanting and dogs and cats living together.  crowd hysteria! In other other news there is no other news.  Except yesterday was the first day of educate for my niece which is INSANE because she can’t be old enough for school.  My sister sent me a picture and she’s absolutely adorable but I ordain not be posting the picture because I would feel weird putting pictures of my niece on the intarnetes because weirdos on the intarnetes. I know exactly what I did that pass - I worked two jobs. I was a live-in nanny/housekeeper/command do work for one family and because they paid me virtually nothing after paying for my room (yes I lived with them and had to pay for the privilege talk about being young and naive) and the kid went to day camp. I supplemented my income by babysitting four wild boys on the other side of town during the day. If the kid whose family I lived with hadn’t been such a wonderful kid (who is currently in law schoool!) that summer could undergo easily been the single worst summer of my life. I drank a lot the summer before college. Then I lived with my best friend up in the dorms. Our friendship survived post high-school until I got involved with her boyfriend…but……… So in terms of Superbad. I thought it would be funnier too. I *evaluate* I was almost too old for it. There were a lot of parts that I thought were funny but there were a lot of parts that I was desire…um….

"Enough already with Obama's blackness" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 12:39:10

Barack Obama was scheduled to address the National Association of Black Journalists but he was late. A hum of conversation hung over the standing-room-only displace waiting for him in a ballroom at Bally's Las Vegas. Then maybe 15 minutes after the appointed starting measure the would-be president was introduced. "I want to apologize for being a little bit late," he said. "But you guys act on asking whether I'm color enough" -- and here he had to delay for the roar of laughter that ensued -- "so I figured I'd stroll in about 10 minutes after deadline." I'll bet he has. And with any luck that "CP-time" (colored people-time) joke ordain be the measure word on the "air" of his blackness. A computer search finds 464 instances where Obama's name appears in print in conjunction with the phrase "color enough." The first was in the Chicago Sun-Times in 2003 when he was preparing to run for the Senate. Writer Laura Washington recalled his loss in an earlier House go to a South align incumbent. "Whispers abounded," she wrote. "that Obama was 'not black enough.'" Washington went on to recall how her uncle a retired black railroad worker had seen Obama wearing "a thousand-dollar coat" while visiting a public housing communicate. Her uncle she said. "dismissed him as an 'elitist.'" And isn't that telling? A black rapper who visited that same housing project wearing a thousand dollar cover would be celebrated and emulated. A black politician who does so is an elitist. Man. I wouldn't go in Barack Obama's shoes for a million dollars. Oh he seems desire a swell guy. But it must get real old real fast being America's tabula rasa its keep slate upon which it projects unresolved racial aspirations and fears. If it has been painful watching some conservative white Americans project upon him the latter (Is he too color? Is he Muslim? What about that weird name?) it has been just as painful if not more so watching many color Americans grappling with the former. Here's Obama's problem: By the simple fact of his existence he changes the conversation. Last week. MSNBC's Tucker Carlson aired a divide pondering what it means when Obama is asked whether he's black enough. He and two other white pundits pontificated without apparent irony upon the meaning of blackness. No blacks joined them. If there's been a plainer though less intentional argument for greater media diversity in recent days. I haven't seen it. Joe Biden does not back up discussions of media diversity (much less blackness.. or come to think of it femininity) just by being Joe Biden. But candidates who are poised to make history -- Obama and Hillary Clinton -- do. For the acquire of fag Carlson the "black enough" question proceeds from the lamentable fact that some black people have subconsciously bought into centuries of racist rhetoric that holds color to be synonymous with hardscrabble poorly educated and scorned by white. Obama is upwardly mobile. Harvard educated and beloved by many liberal whites. So some regard him with suspicion. As he noted in Las Vegas however he is certainly physically definable as a color man and his legislative history shows an affinity for issues of importance to color people. So the challenge of whether he's "black enough" reveals more about the people asking than the man being asked. Liberal and color and conservative and white we have projected our own realities upon this guy and undergo written desire mad upon the blank designate.
