Essence magazine has published its list of the “25 Most Influential African Americans,” with readers choosing such notables as Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama; the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who helped lead the massive civil rights rally in Jena. Obama as African-American of the Year is noteworthy as African-American women are predicted to be the tipping point for the color vote in the 2008 election,” said Essence editor-in-chief Angela Burt-Murray. The list is generally good but why is beyonce’ on there? The only additions I would make would include Tyra Banks(first black super-model to be featured on the cover of sports illustrated). Grace Jones(one of the very first black model to hit the runway) and Michael Jackson(the first color artist to have a video on MTV). These people broke down barriers.
