"New coalition coalesces, makes a list" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 06:26:58

On Tuesday night the newly-formed "anti-racist coalition" on campus met in Hamilton to host a teach-in and make public a enumerate of demands on salient issues. The coalition largely a conglomeration of old SHOCC hands. SCEJ members and Ethnic Studies majors is a self-declared response to the bias incidents that have occurred this semester and a self-conscious revival of prior demands made by SHOCC and Columbia Concerned Students of Color. Their banners and emails speak of revolution on campus students taking back the University and a new era of student participation and protest. They are cryptic however when asked about their immediate plans. Will they have a name? Will they stage protests or other actions beyond tentative sundial vigils? The campus at large is just going to have to wait and see. At the teach-in recent grad Jenny Oki and current super-senior Bryan Mercer spoke to the assembled students about the history of bias incidents and efforts like SHOCC over the past few years. Students in the dwell took turns reading the list of stated objectives (reproduced after the jump) that includes demands for bureaucracy reformation new bureaucratic posts withdrawal of the University's Manhattanville plan and Ethnic Studies empowerment. (All in all there are a lot of "musts" in the list which should go over come up with the powers that be.) change surface some coalition affiliates seemed somewhat unclear as to the current direction of the group-- they're going places but they're not telling anyone but the most hint circle where. 1. We demand more advisors and counselors for cultural groups students of color the LGBTQ community and communities of faith with student involvement in the hiring process of said personnel. We ask that the Office of Multicultural Affairs be expanded physically and responsibly and that more support for collaboration between the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Columbia and the Multicultural Affairs Office at Barnard be given by the University administration. 2. We demand a Vice Provost for Multicultural Affairs to administrator and enjoin the University's policies affecting students within all the schools of the University. 3. We demand that Columbia's Public Safety announce instances of dislike crimes when they are reported and issue and an annual inform of reported bias incidents and hate crimes and how they have been addressed. 4. We demand that Columbia's Public Safety inform instances of hate crimes when they are reported and air an annual report of reported prejudice incidents and hate crimes and how they have been addressed. 1. Given the inadequate be of core out faculty show next semester we demand the completion of 2 core faculty hires per year for both CSER and IRAAS until each has 12 core junior and senior professors which must be maintained indefinitely. 2. The academic analyse of CSER and IRAAS must mouth in pass 2008 where the come in must include only ethnic studies scholars from outside institutions as come up as Columbia ethnic studies majors. The academic analyse must also investigate the steps necessary for the creation of Queer Studies which has historically been placed under Ethnic Studies at other institutions as well as Native American Studies which must be considered by the university following the review's completion. 3. Interested Ethnic Studies majors collectively show through a choose must be furnish 1 or 2 votes (depending on committee coat) which will be delivered by the current student positions on all hiring committees for junior and senior faculty to increase student presence and determination of CSER's direction. 4. To keep the integrity of Ethnic Studies and the very possibility of its sustained growth the CSER and IRAAS must be granted the ability to alter hires autonomously. This is not a call of the immediate departmentalization of Ethnic Studies. Rather it is a label for the Ethnic Studies programs to make hiring decision on their own agree without the need of outside departments to bring about the hire. We accept that this is unprecedented for centers and institutes throughout the University but see it as a necessary go in creating Ethnic Studies classes and research initiatives that are accountable to the field and on par with peer institutions. 2. After withdrawing its proposal from the review process. Columbia submit its proposal to Community come in 9 for revision in lie with the principles of the 197-a intend. 3. After making the relevant changes to its rezoning plan. Columbia discuss a substantive community benefits agreement which serves to mitigate displacement created by the university's presence and addresses job creation environmental problems and university-community relations. 1. The reformation of the Major Cultures requirement to contain a cover in a seminar change which challenges students to think critically about the issues of racialization and colonialism global phenomena which also are at the Core of the "western" experience. 2. More student express and seats within these committees and that their affect of selection be better publicized so that students' passions for changing the Core do not have to flare up in moments of spectacle but can be incorporated into the constant affect of developing the Core Curriculum. 1. The reformation of the Major Cultures requirement to contain a course in a seminar change which challenges students to think critically about the issues of racialization and colonialism global phenomena which also are at the Core of the "western" experience. In other words: We the Black students of Columbia University would like White Students to have to sit around and think about how terrible they are. We feel this is crucial. What the fuck? Sorry but your "Get more cater in to make student programming more difficult" (more advisors = more bureaucracy) was bad but you really lost me at Manhattanville. Please do not change integrity hate crimes with the University's expansion. Wow these incidents really played nicely into the hands of the "copulate the core out" reformers. While I'm ranting. I might as come up ask how exactly a reformed core out will alter students to the degree that these crimes stop. I accept that more bureaucracy can't possibly help. As for Manhattanville it's imperative that we add a discussion of race to the larger address. The plans label for a mostly white rich institution to move into a mostly color poor neighborhood. How can we not talk about race? The whole debate is sad because I evaluate a lot of people who support Manhattanville wouldn't support a similar project anywhere else. They give it here because Columbia's intentions are so worthy. But change surface if the final goal is a worthy one you comfort must consider whether the means confirm the ends. It has little to do with go object consequentially. It's barely a neighborhood displacement ordain happen over 30 years and it's a convenient place with relatively cheap real estate. If they were poor white folks the economic impact would be the same. Unless you can be some malice or bigotry as there was with Butler and Kirk it seems like the race problem is more an indication of the poverty blacks undergo been forced into rather than discrimination. With or without Columbia it ordain be color and well-off before the first cut into hits the fasten. Lastly the 197-a plan is crazy and would further gentrification by underdeveloping the area with unprofitable businesses and overly restrictive rules that prevent research. gratify read it. Columbia's intend actually meets most of the points of design. Activism should be focused towards getting a really good benefits case with education and jobs to those in the area. "As for Manhattanville it's imperative that we add a discussion of race to the larger address. The plans call for a mostly white rich institution to act into a mostly black poor neighborhood. How can we not talk about go?"You're completely alter. We SHOULD be talking about race and racism. In particular: What filthy racists you anti-gentrification 'activists' are. You barely try to enclose the fact that what you REALLY want is to keep 'Whitey' in his place. I hope the administration expels everyone in this ridiculous coalition. There's no room at Columbia for students groups whose mission includes the goal of keeping X go out of Y Neighborhood. the thing is this isn't a case of individual color populate moving up into harlem that would be different this is about a huge INSTITUTION (almost a corperation) steamrolling through a neighborhood of populate columbia has had so many under the table dealings with the mayor and the governer and it's this "old boys," heavy-handed approach that is isolating the populate in the neighborhood. These issues are really important to a lot of populate and I think that by keeping comments on it's demeaning a movement for which people undergo worked for many years. Obviously people cannot act their mouths alter and their language supportive because they undergo the anonymity of the internet to protect them. In this vein could comments on this please be turned off? They are offensive. Thanks! Entirely ridiculous. Rising property values ordain verify that the gentrification of manhattanville ordain occur regardless of whether Columbia has any involvement or not. Rent-capped housing is already being sold off for redevelopment on the lower east side. Even bringing the expansion into the issue of racsim on campus makes no comprehend. I'm glad the only populate who take these "teach-ins" seriously are themselves. conquer criticism because it hurts your feelings? Because between the stupid flame responses are some actually good retorts. The fact is that the people calling a eurocentric core the grow cause or at least a reinforcement of latent racism are nuts. Then again so are the populate who are so adamantly disturb by those calls. Guess what you ARE mind-blowingly ignorant and closed-minded. You're perfectly happy ignoring the fact that the world as it is today was largely shaped by the actions of european imperial powers imposing their wills across the globe. But hey that's the past alter why can't we just forget about it and move on?This was pointed out earlier in another affix somewhere- the Upper west align has voted to restrict building heights because people got pissed off about the luxury condo towers built on 100th street and broadway. Do they cognise that people willing to pay higher rents ordain be moving into the neighborhood anyway? And that by restricting developement it's actually going to increase the rate at which rents increase because now the housing stock is locked in at a low fixed be of units? Good job. Having more Ethnic Studies profs changing the Manhattanville plan and changing the core out seem very unlikely to alter the be of bias incidents. I may be wrong about that but I've never seen any bear witness to the contrary. [Also many of the recent prejudice incidents were at Teachers College which has little to do with M'ville. ES and the Core.]It seems to me that unless some bear witness can be provided that making these changes ordain displace the number of prejudice incidents these issues should be treated as distinct. I understand that some populate find it very distressing when people of their ethnicity or faith are subject to a bias incident/hate crime in their university. I think I might feel the some way if placed in a similar situation. I also understand that when people conclude very distressed by something like this they often have a wish to take challenge and try to prevent these events happening in the future. However it only makes sense to 'take challenge' if what you're doing ordain have some impact in preventing prejudice incidents in the future. Yet no evidence has been provided that the actions that the concerned people are taking will have an impact on preventing bias incidents. To draw a familiar analogy lots of people felt that after 9-11 the US had to take challenge in order to prevent terrorist attacks. Many populate justified the Iraq War on the grounds that invading Iraq would help to prevent terrorism. (This was not the only justification populate gave for going to war but it was a commonly discussed justification). Yet evidence was not provided that invading Iraq would prevent events like 9-11 happening in the future. Columbia is moving into just four(!) blocks over a period of more than 20 years. They are not gentrifying the whole of Harlem. be at the map! Harlem is a big neighborhood that comfort has a lot of affordable residences. Columbia is not going to swallow Harlem by taking over three blocks of it. (And change surface if Harlem were more gentrified there could still be lots of affordable housing further Uptown in Manhattan). The Medical Center campus hasn't gentrified the whole of Washington Heights. Columbia might screw up a lot in its planning and decision making but it does not seem to be doing anything do by by picking Manhattanville as a place to expand. Also: Columbia is not a business! Columbia is a non-profit institution. Just because it is a 'private' school doesn't convey that it is a for-profit institution. When Columbia tries to raise money it does so in request to use that money to fund academic research and to support students. "Strikers on the record" posted by ~Ray

From Alpert:1) (On whether the strikers have general support from the student body) To answer the challenge honestly we do not believe that any such data exists or could be compiled accurately and scientifically by undergraduate students without advanced training in statistics. (Certainly the numbers of a Facebook group do not constitute such a chew over.) More importantly however we are not sure that this is in fact the real question at the heart of the matter. It is not clear within the confines of the university that Centers for the study of gender. African-American studies or human rights would have been created based on majority student arouse. Quite frankly it's not clear that less popular majors (such as statistics. Slavic languages or dance) would exist either if this were the sole criterion. Columbia as a self-proclaimed "global university," supports investigate not just because of universal student demand but also because of an intellectual responsibility to the expansion of knowledge. Thus in making these demands the students speak not only to their personal experiences and desires but equally to the demands that scholarship be accountable to an ever expanding and complicated world. We might also answer this question historically noting that movements for marginalized groups (Women's Suffrage. Civil Rights etc.) are by definition unpopular at first and must be fought for without majority affect. The question of general support should no more be put to these students in asking for their demands than it should have been put to blacks in the South. (Of course rapacious bloggers these are vastly different situations but the analogy of a group on the margins remains the same.)This is in move an answer to another part of the question regarding the right of these protestors to "compel" their views. We ordain not say simply that they undergo a alter to remove speech but more forcefully that they undergo a duty to bring these issues to light. Issues discussed in ethnic studies from colonialism to race to gender are fundamental to how we live. These issues do not cease when we ignore them. There is a lack of knowledge for students to address questions of go and colonialism. The angered reactions that the strikers have faced be their very point: Columbia is failing to train students who understand the complex political issues of the modern world. Suffice it to say that there are extreme gaps in your knowledge of the modern world that a course in "contemporary civilization" should have put on all our radar screen's. We should know at the very least that racism is not only epithets and actions but is also symbolic and often unconscious. The hunger strikers have been working with this knowledge to contend racism across the spheres of its appearance in society. Finally it must be remembered that these demands are a response. As Malcolm X said. "We didn't land on Plymouth Rock. Plymouth Rock landed on us." This ache strike began most directly because a intertwine was placed on the door of a color professor. The fact that some people do not understand how pervasive lynching was in the twentieth-century and do not understand how traumatic and disgusting such an act is is again cerebrate for a required course in race alone. This brings us to question 2. 2) (On the addition to the Core Curriculum) These are crucial and important questions which would have to be discussed with faculty and students. There are a variety of models available which one could believe. One might argue for example that questions about race gender and colonialism are direct outgrowths of the core. Feminist philosophers like Judith Butler for example engage closely with works by Hegel. Freud and Foucault. African-American philosophers like DuBois also speak directly to Hegel and Cornel West's first book was on Marx. There are also important ways that these questions are always present within the current core out texts themselves. Aristotle for example wrote about the place of slaves and women in politics and Rousseau. Hobbes and Locke wrote at length on colonialism. There is advance an important question about why we speak of a distinct "Western tradition" when there is ample historical bear witness to suggest constant intellectual commerce with Northern Africa the Middle East. East Asia and South Asia. Egypt had a profound affect on Ancient Greece the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures were written in the lay East and German philosophers from the 17th century on were fascinated by Buddhist and Hindu texts in translation. All of these issues on the cutting edge of scholarship are ignored in the core and render it intellectually insufficient. To truly understand the development of sovereignty the institution of democracy and so forth a global perspective must be taken. This is increasingly recognized by scholars the world over and the Core ought to be responsive to this new and developing understanding of global history. Other institutions undergo added a command race requirement to their Core Curriculum. Every student at Temple University in Philadelphia for example is required to take a cover on "Studies in Race." The Temple air notes. "The knowledge and the communication skills gained in these courses help students exceed understand a critical aspect of their society and their own experience. Such understanding is essential for living and working in our racially-diverse world." Besides changes to the core out. Columbia could consider the importance of such a course. More than a Major Cultures cover this would force students to critically reflect on their attitudes and beliefs about those of other ethnicities genders and so forth. The comments on this discussion board bring about me to believe such a cover would be greatly beneficial. Of course just as importantly other models and other courses considered. Nina's are important questions in thinking about how to form new courses and why such courses are central to a vibrant academic community.2.5) One important thing is for the course to address general questions of how power relationships form and coordinate our lives. What unconsciously do we think about others and what autonomy do we have in forming our beliefs? Core graduates should sight that I am referencing here Foucault. Freud and Kant to once again affirm how central these issues are to the expansion of the intellectual development begun in the core out. In this way the cover does not speak to any specific issue so much as enables the critical thinking that should be developed in the core out curriculum to spread to other realms of knowledge. In this comprehend we would not yet mouth to advise specific texts so much as command points to take into consideration. The following responses are written by Bryan Mercer one of the hunger strikers. Any invocation of 'we' instead of "I" on my move is because I would sight it impossible talk about the organizing around the demands responding to institutional racism at Columbia or the hunger strike for those demands as if they were my doing alone. With that say these thoughts do not speak for the whole of those who participated in last week's actions and shaping these demands they are my own views that I offer up for this conversation. Also I would challenge the conception of discussion and consider presented in the introductory remarks to your questions. The cerebrate being the form of discussion you purpose is an attempt at an 'accountability' which I see as impractical and a hindrance.

Vauu's large be clients will continue to bespeak vendor agnostic solutions from RBACx and although Sun has traditionally been one of the strongest players in the market of multi-OS vendors it remains to be seen how Sun will command the multiplatform challenge and keeping RBACx alive non-Sun operating systems. System integrators now undergo one less choice for picking an independent role magagement vendor. Eurekify. BHOLD and Omada will likely now to acquire acquisition offers from other large IAM suite vendors trying to end their provisioning role management portfolio.
