It always annoys me when a proponent of otherwise good science says or does some stupid bigoted or otherwise counterproductive thing. Like the sheetestorm not too long back when James Watson made those racist comments. Anayway last night as I was walking home. I started thinking about Dawkins. My object eventually came to the Dawkins videos posted all over Stumbleupon that I watched ages ago and I realized something about the comments that I had previously paid no attention to. Richard Dawkins is pseudoscientific. He defines "The God Hypothesis" as follows: "there exists a superhuman supernatural intelligence who deliberately designed and created the universe and everything in it including us". This is completely and utterly false. This is a definition of Creationism! And besisdes religion is not a scientific hypothesis or proto-science or any other way of explaining the world around us- it is a way to explain ourselves. Do God Delusion supporters seriously think that the Greeks invented the stories of Zeus raping women and giving birth to explain some natural phenomenon? No- they sought ways of explaining the human psyche and motives that control it. Religion has more in common with philosophy than with science. Of course this does not have much to do with pseudoscience. But let me get to the real meat. He sets up a counter-hypothesis which reads as follows: “any creative intelligence of sufficient complexity to design anything comes into existence only as the end product of an extended process of gradual evolution.” He then asserts that if the first hypothesis is false then the second is true. Dawkin's strawman "God hypothesis" can be falsified if:-God does not exist-God is not superhuman-God is not supernatural-God did not create by mental act everything-God created everything by accidentHowever if it is falsified. Dawkins asserts intelligence can only come about as a result of evolution. Now. I don't know about you but these tactics inform me of something called creationism. P. S.- Don't throw tomatoes. I'm allergic to them.
