"Review of Beowful" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-13 04:41:18

I was a bit concerned about the animation… the characters looked straight out of The Elder Scrolls Oblivion. My doubts were silenced as soon as Grendel arrived on the scene. Monsters are often described as “foul” in books but rarely live up to that billing on screen. Grendel is one of the exceptions. Great atmosphere throughout and it is funny to see the unmistakable features of Anthony Hopkins and Brendan Gleeson on CGI characters. This entry was postedon Sunday. "Rackspace Outage" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 14:37:10

The outage was covered by and made it onto a lot of big tech news sites such as and and other well known web companies got wiped off the face of the earth. It was embarrassing for me since I just handed over a new web app to the customer for testing which relied on a web service running on one of my DFW servers. I signed up with Rackspace a couple of months ago and was impressed by the confidence with which they spoke of their 100% guaranteed uptime. “Not 99.99999999999?” I asked. 100% they assured me. Down for three hours? That puts my uptime to date at roughly at 99.791%. Sorry Rackspace but my Nintendo Wii has a better uptime than that. If you want to continue touting your “fanatical support” you ordain undergo to do better. We cannot declare that hardware won’t break that software won’t fail or that we will always be perfect. What we can declare is that if something goes wrong we ordain rise to the cause act action end the air and accept responsibility. If it hadn’t been a lorry crashing into some transformer it would undergo been a giant meteorite. This is God’s way of telling you to listen to your sys admin and not your marketing guy. Update: Got the telecommunicate call from Rackspace ~1 hour after writing this. That is fanatical support since whoever construe this affix had to find out who I was and get in contact with my account manager in that time. I’ll just explain that having been there myself in the past as a sys admin and also working for a broadband provider. I know full come up that these things happen. I am aware that the real test is the response when something like this does come about and it looks like Rackspace did come up to get everything sorted quickly. My issue is with the (now mathematically impossible) 100% uptime claim which no right-minded service provider should furnish and Rackspace now no longer undergo the right to maintain. Ya. Rackspace is expensive but you’re paying for the uptime and great give (albeit slightly OTT at times). I undergo a nice server from Hetzner too and it is dirt cheap… but I wouldn’t like to host any critical apps on it because I’d be getting a label at 3am from an angry American about 50% packet loss. I’d love to have some rack space in Cork - I would be in CIX in a flash if we had any need to be based in Ireland. Everything we do at the moment is for companies abroad. There is a server room in the WebWorks building where my office is too… would be nice to have some equipment in there but that probably costs a bomb and I don’t experience what the connection or redundancy is like. Are ye going to have someone on site 24/7? Of cover there is always an change state door down at the Webworks (except when it’s locked… which is most of the time… but it can be swiftly opened). I undergo been trying to work out of we undergo LOS to the CIX mast… I’m fairly sure you can see it from the roof but I think Connolly hall or the City hall is blocking it from my office. "Science Week?s Carrot-Dangling does not Address ?Root? Problems (I ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-21 16:41:08

has declared her disappointment in ’s carrot-dangling approach to move awareness of science by encouraging Irish bloggers to write about inventions. Let me just preface this by saying: I desire carrots. I would desire to win a free Nintendo Wii. I am just a bit too lazy to think of an invention that I like. But like Alexia. I would rather see the guys put their money to slightly better use. Engaging the bloggers is a good idea - it does create a positive go and if 50 Irish bloggers each get ~800 unique visitors per day then that is good value for advertising. But this is a temporary buzz that lasts a week and at beat a few people walk away knowing a little bit more about the with no greater appreciation for science. To really supplement the power of the communicate of Irish bloggers there are much more valuable questions that you can ask. For example. “How can we bring science teaching into the 21st Century?” or “How can we rid ourselves of the growing apathy among Irish people towards science and technology?” Naturally it begins in the class room. The most exciting science experiment I ever did in Ireland was dabbing a drop of iodine on a potato and watching it move black. “WOW that means it has stiffen in it!”. I exclaimed. But like the sudden cold harsh taste of hydrochloric acid in your throat when you accidentally sip for too long on the pipette my enthusiasm was jarred by cruel nostalgia as I was reminded of the positive hands-on approach to science in school in America and all the things I learned and have never forgotten since. Ancient Egypt“The Pyramid Pull”: studying the pyramids we spent some time brainstorming how they got these huge 2-ton blocks up to the the sides of the pyramids. Is it really possible that they built ramps and had 20 guys dragging these things up with ropes? To prove the concept the teacher brought in a huge wooden box put half the class inside it while the other half at the end of the rope pulled the box up a 25 degree ramp. With a bit of maths we worked out what it must have taken in Egypt. Architecture:“The Skyscraper Challenge”: change integrity into small groups and build the tallest standing coordinate you can out of newspaper sheets rolled tightly into beams. Some populate copped onto the fact that you need some triangles in there for extra strength. Horticulture:Dug a garden in the school courtyard planted vegetables watched them grow. Figured out the conditions necessary for germination and growth by carrying out a load of concurrent experiments e g.. I put a disgorge in a paper pass over and it germinated. Loads of other stuff too. Bee-keeping:Got a bee-hive for the class room (with a cut into through the protect so the bees could go out into the courtyard). Fed and managed the hive marked the queen clipped her wings harvested the honey. Fish:Got a saltwater look for store. Figured out how to fill it. Went drink to the land for a day and caught (with our hands) ~12 species of look for and a couple of crabs and put them into the tank. Watched them fight it out among themselves for a few months. My pipefish didn’t last desire. I agree with there is so much more that can be done to improve “the cold heartless trudge through tomes of science”. I would still encourage you to get involved in the Science Week competitions. Even though they are not addressing the root create of apathy among Irish people towards science and technology it is a positive and entertaining furnish springing up around the displace and any bit of a buzz is exceed than none at all.

"Top 10 Places In Kuching To Eat Laksa" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 14:52:17

Without advance ado. I show you the top 10 list bottom up.#10 - Sin Chong Choon CafeSin Chong Choon Cafe is located at the Green Heights commercial center. And yes the cafe apparently have relations to the famous Chong Choon Cafe at Abell Road which is also in this list. The laksa tastes nothing desire its counterpart though. It has rooms for improvements particularly in the quantity of the ingredients.#9 - Combo LaksaThe Combo Laksa shop is at the Pending commercial center near the Dua Puluh Sen Store. Rumors have it that once upon a measure they served laksa in coconut shells. The color of the gravy looks fantastic but unfortunately not as fantastic in comprehend. It needs a little less coconut milk and a little more alter. Combo Laksa also sells the most expensive laksa I undergo ever seen - Abalone laksa for RM128!! A more realistic RM10 option would get you clams in your laksa.#8 - Barrett's LaksaBarrett's Laksa is being sold in a cafe called Tiang's Cafe at the Bormill Estate. Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce. They go the extra mile by adding look for balls and look for cakes into your laksa - an ingredient desirable but non-essential. The gravy is rich in spices. You can also buy their if you desire it.#7 - Madam Tang's CafeDespite serving one of the best beef noodles in Kuching the laksa at Madam Tang's is somewhat mediocre. The flavor of the gravy is bland and diluted. A regular laksa comes with prawns you can barely see. You might want to coat up your laksa to the RM10 option if you want your prawns truly visible.#6 - Jin Ming CafeJin Ming Cafe may be hidden from the usual displace and bussle of the Sekama main road but the laksa here commands a fair be of faithful eaters. The laksa here is enough to conform to one's cravings for the food. Decent but not spectacular. The only complaint I have is that the prawns are sliced in half and placed outer-side up on your laksa giving you an impression that prawns are aplenty.#5 - Golden Arch CafeThe "golden" laksa of the Golden bend Cafe at the Golden bend Commercial bear on is above average. In the mornings the cafe is usually packed full of populate and parking can be quite a annoy. The laksa is savoury and deserves to be one of the most popular laksa spots in Kuching. I however do not frequent this place. Foody Goody Cafe can hardly be missed if you know where the Kuching Specialist bear on is. The cafe not only sells laksa but a entertain of other local delicacies. Sometimes I think the laksa here is overrated and overhyped. Many populate undergo agreed with me that there is nothing so spectacular about the laksa. In the not-so-faraway arrive of Chong Lin Park lies a cafe selling one of the beat laksa in Kuching. Parking is hassle-free as there are plenty of parking spaces. There are also more than enough tables to cope with the current be adrift of customers. Mei Mei's laksa is delightfully aromatic and rich in ingredients. The price of the laksa as shown in the conceive of below is only RM3.20. Imagine what you would get for a RM5 option. Not only is the laksa delicious but the drinks here are also fantastic. request a kopi peng or teh-c-peng and you would get a smooth-tasting drink with froth. Mei Mei's laksa also needs to keep more consistency in the taste. Sometimes the comprehend of the laksa may not bring home the bacon its "full potential". In fact this is the cerebrate why it lost out on the #1 sight in this list. Its no secret that many populate think Chong Choon Cafe at Abell Road serves the best laksa in Kuching. Just look at the be of customers there! The laksa is usually sold out around 10am. The place is crowded and seats are limited. HOI!!! If only you had posted this earlier before we went to Kuching! We were having a good time trying out laksa but we dont really know where. Cis... Anyway we tried the Beef Noodles in Mdm Tang's. Superb.. my bf wanted to have 3 more bowls of it after that but no measure cos wanna try other things too. So r u comfort going to communicate about Kuching places WHILE u r in Miri? Interesting... :D I think Chong Choon laksa doesnt worth the #1 place consider its ingregdient given doesnt match the price (too little for a RM4 laksa gosh.. only 4 little prawns) the attitude of the stall owner the MSG the alter the crowd.. altho people claim that they are best. I personally prefer Mei Mei and undergo never gone approve to Chong Choon after trying this. Simple reason no so crowded a lot of MSG too more friendly but more important thing is the ingredients. Order a big one for RM5.50 it's as if you see prawns swimming in the laksa gravy (they give 10 big prawns) with the chicken thigh meat. After this bowl you prolly ordain skip your lunch. Flo: Haha you should have tapao-ed 10 packs of Madam Tang's beef noodles approve. And I've been writing this affix for quite a while since back in Kuching. It takes measure to eat all those laksa.. lol. Eleanor: No worries. #2 is just as good with nice drinks some more. Shen: Agreed but Mei Mei's laksa isn't as consistent as Chong Choon's. If Mei Mei can keep.
